The Joys and Benefits of Living Compassionately and Healthfully. In Other Words: Vegan.
Using the Proper Knife

Many people are afraid of using large 8- or 9-inch knives lest they cut themselves, but these knives actually give you more control than small paring knives. Because in a vegan kitchen, you’re not deveining, cleaving, or deboning anyone, all you need is one good knife (okay – and a serrated knife for bread). These and other tips abound on this helpful video that also shows the proper way to chop an onion while keeping it vegetarian (by not adding bits of your finger to the mix!). Enjoy!

Love it, but just wondering…. what is the best and easiest way to cut a large fruit or vegetable like melons and squash? thank you! Love you and all of your materials. You are an angel for animals! and an inspiration to me.

I read…somewhere…(seriously? Brain injury? sorry). It suggested cutting tomatoes with a bread knife. So I have been, and it’s been working amazingly well!
I feel totally the same as chelsea! Your work has been huge in my life, and continues to be!!
For example, this video! So very helpful!

Neat! Never thought to try holding vegetables with fingers tucked in like that – you have such skill!
    : )
And I love how you say “debunking myths about *veganism*” now, hooray!
Thanks for alllllll you do – you inspire me all the time, from how I make my values manifest in my daily meals to how I chop my onions! (A brave choice for a video demonstration, to say the least! I would have started tearing up, I know! haha : )

You are soo awesome, Colleen. I need blades like those some day soon! But I don’t know why I watched the video. I’m already a pretty great cook. I’m very open to learning, but I just wanted to hear a voice of compassion. I just feel like “BLAH”. My sister was the only other vegan in my life and she was just sent off to boot camp (military etc) for 6 months and it feels very lonely. I can listen to other big names, but I favor your hard, dedicated work. I can tell you are a woman of her words. There’s just negative people all around me trying to fill me with doubt and failure, so thank you SO very much for being there when there’s really no one else :(

      Hey Andy,

You posted this a couple of weeks ago – how are you doing now? I understand when you say that there’s no-one around you to support you and offer encouragement – that was my situation a while back too. I know that virtual support is sometimes not as good as having someone actually there with you, but in the absence of anything else, I think it really helps to seek out other like minded folks – through Twitter, Facebook etc. Just to keep yourself surrounded by a little positivity and support. There are tons of individuals and groups who are connecting via FB and other social media with the aim of creating a supportive vegan network. Come and join us! :)

      Hope this helps!
      Amanda
